“Communicate for Comfort”

Time: 1 hr

Class Size: 20-30

Description: Have you learned the hard way how crucial communication is while traveling in the backcountry? Most people are horrible at communicating, in the workplace and in relationships, so we need to put in the extra effort. After years of adventuring with men, our speaker, Natasha Buffo, brings the knowledge from seven years of community mental health tools, plus five years of leadership development, and a sprinkle of wise words from her mom, to open our eyes and ears to the communication skills that can drastically improve comfort and safety while exploring the backcountry and in our everyday lives in the office or at home. This is a raw and honest workshop, with self-reflection, discussion, and activities.

  • Determine Your WHY. Share It and Own It.
  • Speak Up and Listen!
  • Pay Attention to Verbal and Non-Verbal Cues!
  • Ask Open-Ended Questions.
  • Check for Understanding.
  • Remember, “You Can Always Turn Around.”
  • What Defines a Strong Leader?

“Caring & Coping On & Off the Trail”

Time: 2 hrs

Class Size: 10-20

Description: Do you think you know how to help people you care about with their mental health but have never received formal training? Let’s build on that groundwork, and level up. Join us for a highly interactive session diving deep into the gaps where we fall short as a society. This is a chance for a change in perspective where we can learn how to choose connection over comments, high-fives over happy hours, and slowing down over sending it. This workshop will discuss:

  • The intersection of substance use & social circles and events.
  • Coping mechanisms & how injury/illness/mental health can affect them.
  • Triggering language we hear, and often use, every day and how to rephrase.
  • What to look out for on social media and how to respond with connection rather than comments.
  • Active listening while on and off the trail.

“Self-Care That’s Already There!”

Time: 1 hr

Class Size: 20-30

Description: Do you think you don’t have time for self-care? Is trying to add self-care into your schedule causing stress? Do you feel busy most days weeks? We’ll navigate through a few activities and discussions that will help you realize that you do have time for self-care and that you do not need to reduce your time doing anything else, give anything up, or add any additional stress to your life by trying to add in self-care to your already full schedule. I will guide you through fun and simple ways to incorporate joy into what you already do every day, and they will be specifically what brings you joy, not what others think should bring you joy. This workshop will discuss:

  • How we can incorporate self-care into the lives we already lead, without removing other activities/commitments, or carving out more time.
  • How often we use the word “busy” and how we can change our perspective and our language to better explain our days to those around us, making space for understanding and support, and space for you to feel something other than busy.

SEMINAR: “Invisible Injuries: Experiences of Concussion, Grief and Depression”

Time: 2 hrs

Class Size: 40+

Description: Have you, or someone you know, navigated through something debilitating that left no physical scars? Join us for this vulnerable account of a few of the seemingly invisible experiences, what it was like in the thick of them, and how others helped. This presentation will share personal experiences through depression, grief, and a serious concussion. The stories will focus on the internal journey – the part that others do not see and is rarely talked about. There will be examples of how friends and loved ones might judge symptoms as offensive or how they try to help. We’ll talk about triggering language/objects and the trauma that continues to affect one’s future decisions. Most importantly, we’ll examine what works and how others can actively support. The session will end with questions from the audience.

  • Leaders will gain empathy for people who might experience an invisible injury, like concussion grief, or depression.
  • Leaders will have examples of what can be helpful in these situations and can better help others navigate through them in the future.
